International Women’s Day 2021: promoting gender equality in justice to support unity in diversity

On the occasion of this year’s International Women’s Day, judge Nina Betetto, President of the CCJE and Judge of the Slovenian Supreme Court, highlights the role of women judges and how the Consultative Council of European Judges advances gender equality in justice through its work and contributes to promoting standards for a better access of women judges to the judicial profession, equal working conditions, equal opportunities for promotion.

In her statement, Judge Betetto recalls both the importance of equal access of women to justice and the role of justice to protect women, for example when they are victims of domestic abuse or trafficking. In all these cases it is justice which may and should step in and protect women. The CCJE’s objective is to provide for a full and unequivocal practical access of women to justice.

Equal access of women to justice is especially important nowadays, when in the conditions of sanitary crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, disadvantaged groups and vulnerable persons, including women, are affected the most, as underlined in her Statement on the role of judges at the time of pandemic issued in 2020.
