Justice Duro Sessa of the Supreme Court of Croatia, member of the CCJE (and also member of its Working Group) and President of the International Association of Judges (IAJ), contributed to the high-level international judicial conference on the importance of promoting the rule of law on 19-20 September 2024 in University of Zadar, Croatia. The conference was organised jointly by the Association of Croatian Judges and the Central and Eastern European Law Initiative (CEELI) and included sessions on crisis communication, especially in view of the media targeting judges and the judiciary in some member states of the Council of Europe, and common European standards of freedom of expression and effective use of social media for reinforcing the rule of law in practice. Justice Sessa presented relevant standards highlighted in several CCJE Opinions, particularly in the Opinion No. 25 (2022) on freedom of expression of judges, Opinion No. 18 (2015) on the position of the judiciary and its relations with the other powers of state in a modern democracy, Opinion No. 23 (2020) on the role of associations of judges in supporting judicial independence and other Opinions. The participants of the conference recognised the importance and practical value of the CCJE standards and recommendations, including in the context of attempts of undermining the public trust in justice systems, as well as having a negative impact on other fundamental principles of the judicial independence and impartiality.
