The Council of Europe continues to support Research Ethics Committees of RA to further strengthen their capacities

The Council of Europe continues to support the national authorities of Armenia to enhance capacities in the field of research ethics committees. To sustain further the training needs of the national partners on 18-19 November 2023, two-days follow-up training session was organized for the members of Research Ethics Committee under the National Institute of Health of RA. 

The training programme aimed at equipping the members of the Research Ethics Committee with the necessary skills and tools to discuss the ethical aspects with regards to biomedical research. 

The training session was opened by Maxime Longangué, Deputy Head of Council of Europe Office in Yerevan, Laurence Lwoff, Head of the Human Rights and Biomedicine Division of the Council of Europe, and Hrayr Aslanyan, Chair of the Research Ethics Committee.

Following the general presentation of the Oviedo Convention and its Additional Protocols and the work of the Council of Europe in the field of healthcare and biomedicine, the participants were introduced to the national and international standards in the field of Research Ethics Committees.

The national and international standards in the fields of functioning of research ethics committees based on the Guide for research ethics committee members elaborated by the Group of Specialists on Biomedical Research working under the authority of the Committee on Bioethics of the Council of Europe, the work of the World Health Organization in the field of research ethics and other very relevant topics, including ethical aspects of communication of the decisions of research ethics committees were explored during the training session. 

In parallel, the participants, as leading specialists and consultants of the Project have strengthened their capacities and skills on public speaking and communication. Participants have gained a profound understanding of the logical structure of effective speeches, bridging theoretical academic knowledge with practical speaking skills.

The training session was organized within the framework of the Council of Europe Project on “Protection of Human Rights in Biomedicine II” which is implemented within the Council of Europe Action Plan for Armenia 2023-2026
