As a way to bring the voices of youth into discussions on human rights and biomedicine, the Steering Committee for Human Rights in the fields of Biomedicine and Health (CDBIO) organised a pilot youth forum on AI in healthcare, to provide a space for youth to interact with policy makers in an intergovernmental setting.
The forum took place at the Council of Europe in Strasbourg on 6 (morning) June 2023, held in the framework of the third plenary of the CDBIO. The aim of the forum was to provide the Committee with youth perspectives to inform its own work, including its strategic objectives and actions in the field of human rights and biomedicine.
Youth participants and CDBIO delegations exchanged views, perspectives, and suggestions on a range of issues, notably on the mitigation of bias in AI, the training and education of health professionals and patients, equal access to the benefits of AI, and the responsibility/accountability for AI systems used in healthcare settings.
The pilot allowed the CDBIO to develop its reflection on the future engagement and consultation of young people in its intergovernmental work, including the organisation of larger scale forum as part of the Committee’s Strategic Action Plan on Human Rights and Technologies in Biomedicine (2020-2025).
