Books for parents “Growing up in a democratic family” and “Living in a democratic family” will be presented in the Radisson Blue Old Mill hotel in Belgrade (Bulevar Vojvode Mišića 15) on Tuesday, 19 October 2021.

Publications in English and Serbian were developed to help parents to raise their children in a democratic spirit, so that one day they become active citizens. “Growing in a democratic family” tackles the age group from 6-14, while “Living in a democratic family” is aimed to parents of teenagers, aged 15-19. Both publications include practical examples for parents showing them how to handle certain common family issues in a more democratic way - for example, addiction prevention, divorce, aggression, criticism. Authors also created additional materials that accompany the publications: poster, planner and a family board game. They all will be available online for free to be used in schools and within families.

Introductory remarks will be given by:

  • Tobias Flessenkemper, Head of Office, Council of Europe Office in Belgrade
  • Anamarija Viček, State Secretary, Ministry of Education, Science and Technological Development

After the introductory remarks, authors Rolph Gollob and Svetlana Lazić will present the rationale behind producing these publications and explain how parents, schools and society as a whole can benefit from them.

The event is organised by the joint European Union and Council of Europe action “Quality education for all”, that is a part of the programme “Horizontal Facility for the Western Balkans and Turkey 2019-2022”. Тhe European Union, as the largest donor in Serbia, supports the modernisation of the education system and its harmonisation with EU standards and practices. Since 2003, the EU has donated more than 100 million euros for the education sector reform.

Media are invited to cover the conference that will start at 10:30. Separate interviews can be arranged upon request. Simultaneous English-Serbian interpretation will be provided.
