History and history teaching have been a focus for the Council of Europe’s work on education since its inception. From the start and as stated in the European Cultural Convention in 1954, the organisation recognised the importance of history as a basis for the education of the citizens of Europe and its role in bridging differences and bringing people together by establishing mutual understanding and confidence between the peoples of Europe.

The annual Forum for History Education offers a space in which public authorities, teachers, curriculum developers, academics, etc. can share their views and their practices in terms of history education with the aim of developing recommendations for improvement of History Education. It will gather seventy participants from all over Europe and explore the role of historical sites as education tools that foster the development of competences for democratic culture. The participants will have the opportunity to explore Sites of memories in Belgrade through 4 routes: the Belgrade Fortress, the Old Fair Ground, the Ottoman and Jews in heritages and controversial history and monuments.

The event begins at 9:15, and the introductory panel is open to media. Interviews can be arranged upon request. Simultaneous interpretation will be provided.

The organisation of the Forum is supported by the joint European Union and the Council of Europe action “Quality education for all”.
