Acting together in the face of crisis: Protecting children from trafficking and exploitation in the Western Balkans
Building on the human rights and anti-trafficking co-operation in the framework of the joint Council of Europe and the European Union Horizontal Facility Programme for the Western Balkans and Turkey, the regional conference will take stock of the impact of the national anti-trafficking measures on combating child trafficking, and define areas where improvements can be induced through capacity building, improved co-ordination and co-operation.
Drawing on existing evidence, in particular findings of the Group of Experts on Action against Trafficking in Human Beings (GRETA), the conference will discuss new channels for action against child trafficking in the Western Balkans, addressing the full range of vulnerabilities faced by children in the region.
The conference will seek to underline the importance of placing the rights of the children at the heart of the COVID-19 response, emphasizing sustainable solutions that address root causes of exploitation and trafficking.
The conference will also contribute to the development of the new Council of Europe Strategy for the rights of the child (2022-2027), which aims to address persisting and emerging challenges to children’s rights, including in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, and ensure synergies with relevant policy developments.
