Judges and Prosecutors gathered to exchange views on the judicial ethics codes/guidelines planned to be developed

The meeting, held on 6-7 October 2016 in Izmir, was part of a larger consultation exercise on gathering inputs from all the main stakeholders for the development of the code of judicial ethics, planned under the European Union – Council of Europe joint project on “Strengthening Judicial Ethics in Turkey, where the HCJP stands as the main beneficiary.

During the two days’ meeting, fifty-four judges and prosecutors from Izmir, Afyon and Istanbul provinces and two lawyers from the Turkish Bar Association examined the current challenges faced by judicial ethics in Turkey with particular focus on their effects on human rights with the support by national and international experts. Furthermore, participants discussed and provided valuable inputs concerning the necessities and their expectations on ethical codes/guidelines planned to be developed.

Participants received a booklet containing a compilation of main international standards on judicial ethics. The booklet provides judges and prosecutors with the most important international and European standards related to judicial ethics including documents by relevant bodies of the United Nations and the CoE.
