Development of a human rights reflex was the focus of Turkish pilot bar associations at a working group meeting on training

On 16-17 May 2019, in Ankara, Turkish lawyers experienced in human rights training reviewed the draft handbook and materials developed by the consultants based on the recommendations of the working group.

The handbook has been designed as a tool which will provide clear and practical guidelines for lawyer trainers on how to implement the two-day peer-to-peer training on human rights in an interactive manner. This document will be an instrumental component of the training programme of bar associations which will support the development of a human rights reflex among lawyers in their daily work. “It is one of the main responsibilities of lawyers to defend the human rights of their clients”, said Mr Tankut Soykan, Project Manager at the Council of Europe, underlining that the aim of the new training programme is to enhance the implementation of European human rights standards at the national level.

The new human rights training programme will be developed with a view to training 5000 Turkish lawyers under the Joint Project on “Strengthening the Capacity of Bar Associations and Lawyers on European Human Rights Standards (SCoBAL)”.
