Minority Languages promotion in Switzerland backed by expert report

French and German should be given more support in Swiss cantons where they are non-official languages, whilst Italian and Romansh need more promotion in economic and social life, the Committee of Experts of the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages (ECRML) recommends in its latest report.

The report welcomes the financial assistance to various cantons to help develop multilingualism and suggests support for Romansh, including measures to help speakers use the language in courts and legal settings and the creation of a private radio station. It recommends making German language education available where German is not an official language.
