Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Marija Pejčinović Burić, has concluded on 11 November 2019 her official two-day visit to Georgia ahead of the Chairmanship in the Council of Europe that Georgia will assume on the 27th of November 2019.

The agenda of the Secretary General’s visit included meetings with H.E. Davit Zalkaliani, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Georgia; H.E. Archil Talakadze, Chairperson of the Parliament of Georgia; H.E. Giorgi Gakharia, Prime Minister of Georgia; and with H.E. Salome Zourabichvili, President of Georgia. The forthcoming presidency of Georgia in the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe, its priorities, including civil participation, child-friendly justice and democracy education, as well as challenges lying ahead were the key topic of discussions.

“The Secretary General also took part in the presentation of the commemorative coin for the 70th Anniversary of the Council of Europe and 20th Anniversary of Accession of Georgia to the Council of Europe and launched the new Council of Europe’s Action Plan for Georgia for 2020-2023.

“Our joint Action Plan aims both to support domestic reforms and enable better compliance with Georgia’s international obligations,” Secretary General said, stressing that the Action Plan would help further ensure the application of the European Convention on Human Rights, strengthen local government and citizen participation, and support justice reforms. “Confidence-building measures are also an important dimension of our co-operation and, as always, our projects are based on the recommendations of Council of Europe monitoring and advisory bodies”, she added.
