On 22 July, the Cultural Routes of the Council of Europe programme was presented in San Sebastián/ Donostia in the framework of the summer course “St James Northern Way, a great European Cultural Route facing the challenge of a sustainable future”. The course, organized by the Basque Regional Ministry of Culture and the Basque Country University, aimed to find solutions to adapt the Northern Route of St James Way to the challenges due to the pandemic, to increase sustainability, to facilitate the access, safety and comfort of the pilgrims and to improve their overall experience on the Way.

Since the discovery of the supposed tomb of the saint in the 9th century, the Way of St. James became one of the most important Christian pilgrimages during the Middle Ages. In 1987, it became the first certified Cultural Route of the Council of Europe. Each year, hundreds of thousands of travellers set out to make their way to Santiago de Compostela. As there are endless numbers of branches to the route, it is common to begin the journey literally from one's doorstep. The Northern Way is the second longest Route to Santiago de Compostela (800 kilometers) and runs along the Northern Coast of Spain with unobstructed views on beaches and cliffs. The Northern Way goes back to the ancient Kingdom of Asturias in the 9th Century. Stops can be made in the cities of San Sebastián, Bilbao, Santander, Gijón and Ribadeo.
