“The World Cities’ Day has never resonated so prominently in Europe”, says Bernd Vöhringer

On the occasion of the World Cities’ Day, celebrated each year on 31 October, the President of the Congress Chamber of Local Authorities Bernd Vöhringer (Germany, EPP/CCE) made the following statement:

“The World Cities’ Day instituted in 2014 has never resonated so prominently in Europe, in view of crises we currently go through, including the accelerated climate change, pandemics and the war. I think more particularly about Ukrainian cities which face unimaginable suffering and destruction. Since the Second World War has never such a level of resilience been required to face urban challenges and to ensure local governance.

The 2022 theme of the Day "Act local to go global" highlights the importance of local and regional authorities in providing responses at the grassroots. The last Congress session, which ended yesterday, focused precisely on the challenges which face our democracies such as hate speech and fake news, environmental concerns and of course the military aggression of Russia against Ukraine. A special Local Chamber debate was dedicated to the ongoing revision of the European Urban Charter to integrate the current major challenges of the European urban living.

I am confident that the revision of the European Urban Charter is a notable development to be welcomed on the occasion of the World Cities’ Day.”
