On 19 April 2021, the President of the Congress, Leendert Verbeek and the President of the Republic of Moldova, Maia Sandu, came together in Strasbourg following the signature a roadmap for local and regional democracy in the Republic of Moldova last week.
They discussed issues of common interest concerning local democracy in Moldova and the participation of Moldova in Council of Europe and in the Congress.
“Increasing the financial autonomy of the local communities and building the capacities of the municipalities of Moldova are essential conditions for the development and modernization of the Republic of Moldova,” stated Maia Sandu while highlighting the importance of strengthening co-operation between the Congress and the Congress of the Local Authorities of Moldova (CALM).
The Congress and Moldova are working together to strengthen local self-government through the the project “Reinforcing the culture of dialogue and consultation of local authorities in the Republic of Moldova”, in the framework of the Council of Europe Action Plan for the Republic of Moldova 2021-2024.
