Estonian Prime Minister Taavi Rõivas opened a Council of Europe conference on gender equality in Tallinn, Estonia today. The two-day conference – which can be followed live on this link – gathers some 150 participants from nearly 40 Council of Europe member states to assess progress of the Council of Europe Gender Equality Strategy 2014-2017.

A top priority for Estonia as current chair of the Committee of Ministers is to promote gender equality. Although much has been done, Prime Minister Rõivas pointed out that gender stereotyping and women’s access to justice remain serious challenges, that no one should have to face gender based discrimination and called on governments to set positive examples. He also said that gender-based inequality persists – and not only in Estonia where, according to Eurostat, Estonia has the largest gender gap in wages in the European Union, for example. He explained that gender inequality is a broad issue: "In 2015, only half of the world’s working-age women were in the labour force, compared to 77 percent of working-age men. Paying more consideration to the fact that inequality does exist, we must be able – together – to reverse that trend."
