Childrens’ Forum “Children, actors of Citizenship”

In the framework of the World Forum for Democracy, the Directorate General of Democracy will organise the third edition of the Childrens’ Forum “Children, actors of Citizenship”.

Pupils aged 8-10 will present respectively from ten initiatives based upon the 2018 World Forum for Democracy theme “Gender equality” and upon living together at school.

The initiatives presented in the form of a play, a song or a video, will allow the children to express themselves, to present innovative ideas to improve the implementation of standards on children’s rights and encourage the development of civic participation of youngsters.

Conference on the use of technology in managing offenders in prisons and probation - SPACE II report on persons under the supervision of probation agencies in Europe in 2018

The Annual Conference of Directors of Prison and Probation Services will discuss the advantages and the risks of using new technologies in the management of suspects and offenders. Ionas Nicolaou, Minister of Justice and Public Order of Cyprus, and Jan Kleijssen, Director of Information Society and Action against Crime of the Council of Europe, will speak at the opening.

On 21 May the Council of Europe will publish its annual survey on persons under the supervision of Probation Agencies in Europe for 2018 (SPACE II), which will be presented at the conference by Professor Marcelo Aebi, from the University of Lausanne. The report contains information provided by 41 probation agencies. The conference is open to the media. The opening session (21 May from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.) and the closing session (22 May from 13:30 p.m. to 17:00 p.m.) will be webcast live.

The conference “Women’s Rights at the Crossroads: Strengthening International Co-operation to Close the Gap between Legal Frameworks and their Implementation” will focus on improving efforts to end violence against women, which is a violation of women’s human rights and a major obstacle to gender equality. Expected to open the conference, which will be held in French and will be open to media, are Secretary General Thorbjørn Jagland, French Minister of State for Gender Equality and the Fight against Discrimination Marlène Schiappa, UN Special Rapporteur on Violence against Women Dubravka Šimonović, President of the Group of Experts on Action against Violence against Women and Domestic Violence (GREVIO) Feride Acar, and Human Rights Commissioner Dunja Mijatović.

The conference, which will be held in French, will be open to the press (Agora building, room G03)
