Secretary General: more states should join North-South Centre to better combat global challenges

Speaking at an event in Strasbourg to mark the 30th anniversary of Lisbon´s North-South Centre, Council of Europe Secretary General Marija Pejčinović Burić called on states from Europe and its neighbouring regions to join the Council of Europe’s North-South Centre to better tackle global challenges such as populism and radicalisation, climate change, conflict and instability and resulting migrant flows.

“These contemporary challenges do not stop at borders or regions; they affect both member states of the Council of Europe and our neighbours. It is by growing its membership that the North-South Centre can reach further and aim higher. The North-South Centre´s work today is more urgent than ever”, said Secretary General Marija Pejčinović Burić.

Officially known as the European Centre for Global Interdependence and Solidarity of the Council of Europe, the centre promotes dialogue between countries of the northern and southern hemispheres, raises awareness about interdependence and fosters stability. It was established as an ‘Enlarged Partial Agreement’ allowing non-Council of Europe member states to join. It currently includes 21 member states: Algeria, Andorra, Azerbaijan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Cape Verde, Croatia, Cyprus, Greece, Holy See, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Malta, Montenegro, Morocco, Portugal, Romania, San Marino, Serbia, Spain and Tunisia.
