Strasbourg, 26/06/2012 – Voting today by secret ballot, delegates to the Parliamentary Assembly elected Gabriella Battaini-Dragoni to the post of Deputy Secretary General of the Council of Europe, exceptionally for a three-year term of office.
An absolute majority of the votes cast was required at the first ballot.
The two candidates put forward by the Committee of Ministers to the Assembly for election, Gabriella Battaini-Dragoni and Gérard Stoudmann, attracted 133 and 117 votes respectively.
This exceptional three-year term of office is intended to ensure a sequence in the elections of Secretary General and the Deputy Secretary General, allowing complementarity between the profiles of the two post holders.
"I should like to thank the Members of the Parliamentary Assembly for having placed their confidence in me as the next Deputy Secretary General of the Council of Europe. During the next three years, I will work to assist the Secretary General in strengthening the political relevance and the operational capacities of our Organisation as the guardian of human rights, democracy and the rule of law. I will work to facilitate the implementation of our on-going reforms in a coordinated way, building on the strengths of all Council of Europe organs and institutions, ensuring constant dialogue with our committed staff." declared Gabriella Battaini-Dragoni.
