Strasbourg, 29.05.2012 - Adding his voice to the international condemnation of the recent massacre in Houla, the President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), Jean-Claude Mignon, today called on the Syrian authorities to co-operate fully with the Special Envoy of the United Nations and the Arab League, Kofi Annan, and with United Nations observers in the field.
“I am appalled by the news reaching us from Syria. According to the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, most of those who died in the Houla massacre were the victims of summary executions. In a climate of such violence and impunity, it is impossible to talk about launching a true process of democratic transition in Syria, and I call on all sides to fully respect the current ceasefire,” he declared.
“Mr Annan’s six-point peace plan is currently still the only way out of this crisis, which has already cost thousands of lives. This makes it essential to create all the necessary conditions for the plan to be implemented,” the President concluded.
