The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe has granted the Parliament of Morocco ‘Partner for Democracy’ status – the first parliament to receive this particular recognition. The new status was introduced in 2010 to strengthen institutional co-operation with parliaments of non-member states in neighbouring regions wishing to participate in the political debate on common challenges that transcend European boundaries.
Mr Abdelwahed Radi, Speaker of the House of Representatives of Morocco welcomed the decision, seeing it as part of Morocco's political and constitutional changes intended to bring "unity in diversity, proper economic governance, moral public policy and equal opportunities in all fields".
