Council of Europe leaders condemn terrorist attack in Nice

We are deeply shocked and saddened by the barbaric and cowardly terrorist act in Nice on Thursday.

We condemn in the most vigorous way this heinous attack and we express our deepest condolences and our sympathy to the families of the victims.

We also express our full and unconditional support and solidarity to the French people and Government in their efforts to maintain an open, pluralistic, democratic and inclusive society, which guarantees and protects the fundamental values and principles of living together.

Any act of terrorism, trying to instrumentalise religion, will not succeed in undermining the foundations of our common democratic culture. Hate speech and hate crimes are unacceptable and must be outrooted from our societies.

We reaffirm our commitment to defend our values, without affecting the fundamental freedoms and rights upon which our democracies rest.
