Sixty years ago, the governments of ten European countries met in London where they dedicated themselves to co-operating closely with each other to champion human rights, and to strengthen democracy and the supremacy of the rule of law in their own countries: thus the Council of Europe was born.

Today the Council of Europe unites all the countries of continental Europe, from Iceland to Russia, from Norway to Malta, and including the Balkan and the Caucasian nations. Only Belarus is missing, as it does not yet satisfy the Organisation's values.
