Look and Don’t Forget: Young Europeans commemorate the Roma Genocide in Krakow and Auschwitz

On the 2nd August 1944 in the so-called “Gypsy camp” at Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp, around 3000 Roma were exterminated during one single evening. This date is commemorated as the Roma Genocide Remembrance Day.

The Council of Europe Youth Department supports TernYpe International Roma Youth Network which, together with partner organisations, organises an educational and commemoration event from 29 July to 4 August involving some 200 young Roma and non Roma will gather in Krakow and Auschwitz. The main aim of the Dikh He Na Bister (Look and Don’t Forget) is to raise awareness among young Europeans, civil society and decision-makers about the Roma Genocide, as well as about the mechanisms of antigypsyism in a challenging context of rising racism, hate speech and extremism in Europe.

The Council of Europe supports the activities of ternYpe and Roma youth in researching, discussing and discovering the meaning of the Roma Genocide as a way of understanding human rights, history and support for the work against discrimination.

Right to Remember handbook for education with young people on the Roma Genocide was developed under the Roma Youth Action Plan project to support all those interested and wishing to promote deeper awareness of the Roma Genocide and to combat discrimination.
