DRIVERS, REASONS AND CONSEQUENCES OF HATE SPEECH AND EXTREMISM

These working groups will discuss the Drivers, Reasons and Consequences of hate speech and extremism. The groups will be a facilitated discussion space so you can share your opinion, ideas and examples on the chosen topic, as well as hear other contributions from your colleagues. The working groups will be held on 26 April between 11-13:00. Please chose one of the groups.

A) Racism and discrimination

This group will discuss about the racism and discrimination in the communities we live in. It will explore through discussion and examples some definitions of racism and then discuss the drivers and consequences of discrimination in our societies.

B) Terrorism

This group will explore the perceptions, images and understanding of terrorism in today’s societies. It will look into drivers, reasons and consequences from terrorism based on the experience and ideas of the participants

C) Radicalisation

The group will explore types of radicalisation and will talk about the drivers of radicalization based on the local circumstances. Through this discussion the participants will share reasons and consequences from radicalisation.

D) Refugees

This group will share specific situations, examples and contexts of refugees in the Arab and European regions. It will look into drivers, reasons and consequences of hate speech targeting refugees.

E) Populism

The working group on populism will discuss examples of populism in the political contexts in both regions and will discuss the consequences of populism connected with hate speech.

F) Sexism

This working group will explore the drivers of sexist hate speech and sexism in societies today and will also map the consequences of sexism and discrimination of women in societies.

G) Islamophobia

The working group will explore the drivers and reasons for islamophobic hate speech and discrimination and how it impacts the societies in both regions. It will also share examples of consequences from islamophobia on the local level.

RESPONSES TO
HATE SPEECH AND EXTREMISM (STRATEGIES AND SOLUTIONS)

These workshops will allow participants a facilitated discussion space to share and build common understanding on the approaches in dealing with hate speech and extremism. The workshops will be held on 26 April between 15-18:00. Please chose one of the groups.

A) The role of education in decreasing hate speech, radicalisation and extremism

Sharing examples and discussing the role that education (formal and non-formal) can play in decreasing hate speech, radicalisation and extremism

B) Social integration / cohesion

Place to share ideas and explore what is social inclusion and integration as well as how to achieve better cohesion in our societies

C) Youth empowerment

A workshop to share ideas and projects which contribute to youth empowerment and successful youth participation

D) Conflict transformation and counter-radicalisation

Workshop to explore strategies that support the conflict transformation and counter radicalization as well as space to share your work on these topics

E) Dialogue through religious/political discourse

How to support and enhance dialogue in the political and religious discourse? A space to share ideas and examples of good practices

F) Counter and alternative narratives

How to build counter and alternative narratives to hate speech? Workshop to share examples of the No Hate Speech campaign and to learn more about building counter-narratives

TAKING ACTION

On the last day we will have a chance to take action and to work on creating an output, a message, a new tool or a performance together. The following workshops on Creativity, Learning and Campaigning for Human Rights and Dialogue will be provided and you can choose one to contribute on the 28 April from 9-13h. The exact tool used in the workshop will be decided by the participants together with the facilitator.

B) Short videos with alternative narratives

Creating videos with counter or alternative narratives

C) Visual arts

A group developing messages, photos, slogans or other visual tools

D) Theatre and role plays

Discover and prepare a scene using Forum Theatre techniques

E) Common Action Day

Plan joint online actions and messages for an action day of the No Hate Speech Campaign

F) Education activities

Share different educational tools and build an educational activity together
