Visegrad Regional Seminar on Global Development Education 2017

The Visegrad Regional Seminar on Global Development Education took place on the 7th and 8th of June in Prague, Czech Republic, gathering 53 participants. This seminar is part of the cycle of regional seminars with the specific purpose of monitoring the recognition and implementation of Global Development Education in different European regions.

In particular, as part of the monitoring process planned to assess the implementation of the Strategic Recommendations of the 3rd European Congress on Global Education (Zagreb, 2015), the Visegrad Regional Seminar on Global Development Education 2017 represented an opportunity for the various regional actors to jointly discuss existing perspectives and further developments on the concept and practice of Global Development Education in terms of policy-making, curricula development, pedagogical support and advocacy, and in accordance with UN 2030 Agenda and SDG 4, 4.7.

In terms of quadrilogue representation, the seminar had five representatives from governments, 32 from civil society organisations, two from local authorities, 10 from education and academia, and four from international organisations.

The seminar has been organised by the North-South Centre of the Council of Europe with the support of the European Commission and in cooperation with the following partners: Czech Forum for Development Co-operation-FoRS (Czech Republic); Hungarian Association of NGOs for Development and Humanitarian Aid – HAND (Hungary); Grupa Zagranica (Poland); The Slovak NGDO Platform – PMVRO (Slovakia). A follow-up meeting to the seminar will take place in 2018 and 2019.

This event has been carried out in the context of the ‘Global Education Seminars', organised in the framework of the Joint Programme between the European Union (EU) and the Council of Europe (CoE) with the aim of promoting Global Development Education (GDE) in new EU member States and candidate countries. For the period 2016-2019, the European Union is partnering with the Council of Europe, through its North-South Centre, to include Global Development Education (GDE) in formal education in the Balkans, Baltic, South East Europe and Mediterranean and Visegrad regions. Activities of the Global Education Programme are co-funded by the Civil Society and Local Authorities Programme of the European Union and the Council of Europe.
