project description

Promoting freedom of expression, media independence and plurality in Morocco

Building upon the achievements of the activities implemented in co-operation with Moroccan partners in 2014 and 2015, the Council of Europe, with financial aid from Norway, continued to support the promotion of freedom of expression and media independence and plurality in Morocco.

Within the framework of the “Neighbourhood Partnership with Morocco 2015-2017”, the programme aimed to:

  • Support the improvement of a legal and institutional environment which provides safeguards for freedom of expression, independence of the media, access to information and internet freedoms;
  • Contribute to knowledge development and capacity building for journalists and other media actors on their rights and responsibilities;
  • Strengthen capacities of the judicial authorities and lawyers with regard to the respect and protection of freedom of the media.

The activities were implemented upon demand by Moroccan partners, with the relevant Council of Europe standards as a basis.

The project ran until December 2017.
