Round table on the Council of Europe actions on child and youth participation

Council of Europe round table discussion to develop actions on participation of children and young people, co-organised with the Finnish Ministry of Education, takes place in Helsinki on 2 December. In a video message, Deputy Secretary General congratulates Finland for being at the forefront of the children's rights cause in Europe, and calls for key partners and member states to help and support work on child participation.

Adapting social services to demands of pluralist society

[04/12/2009 17:00:00] In her opening speech to the conference ''Interacting in Diversity for Social Cohesion'', Maud de Boer-Buquicchio stressed that public services need to reflect the diversity of society to contribute to stability and social cohesion. The conference, taking place in Strasbourg on 7-8 December, aims to launch a European debate on social and operational questions facing public institutions as a result of interaction with cultural diversity. MedNET network to hold a high Level Conference

[27/11/2009] On 1 December politicians in charge of drug issues from ten Mediterranean countries will meet for the first time in Strasbourg. Maud de Boer-Buquicchio calls for a culture of equality and respect to combat violence against women

On the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women on 25 November, the Deputy Secretary General declared: ''It is the responsibility of our 47 member states to have a policy of zero tolerance in this respect. The finalisation in 2010 of a Council of Europe Convention preventing violence against women, protecting victims and punishing perpetrators will be a major step forward towards a culture of equality and respect''. Conference on prevention of torture in Europe

''The establishment of the CPT by the member States of the Council of Europe was an extraordinary and courageous act. For the first time ever, a group of sovereign countries agreed to throw open the doors of their police stations, prisons and psychiatric hospitals to independent international supervision'', said Maud de Boer-Buquicchio at the Conference on 6 November in Strasbourg.

Launch of the Children’s Rights Information Campaign in Strasbourg

Maud de Boer-Buquicchio, Deputy Secretary General and Roland Ries, the Mayor of Strasbourg participated in the event marking the launch of the Council of Europe Information Campaign on Children’s Rights, taking place on 9 October in Strasbourg. The event sought to publicise the cooperation which the Council of Europe has undertaken with the City of Strasbourg in order to enable children and families discover the rights of the child in an understandable and enjoyable way.

''A lasting peace in Europe must be built on trust, co-operation and values''

On the occasion of the inauguration of the exhibition of the Statute of the Council of Europe and of the European Convention on Human Rights on 28 September, the acting Secretary General stressed that both texts were written in the belief that a lasting peace in Europe must be built on trust, co-operation and values, not walking on a tightrope of suspicion, intimidation and fear between nations, which had been the established practice in Europe before that day.
