Forum on ''Creating a culture of human rights through education''

The North-South Centre organised on 13 and 14 November the 2009 edition of the Lisbon Forum, with the aim to promote the creation of a culture of human rights, through ''quadrilogue'' action, i.e. governments, parliamentarians, local and regional authorities and civil society. Conference on prevention of torture in Europe

''The establishment of the CPT by the member States of the Council of Europe was an extraordinary and courageous act. For the first time ever, a group of sovereign countries agreed to throw open the doors of their police stations, prisons and psychiatric hospitals to independent international supervision'', said Maud de Boer-Buquicchio at the Conference on 6 November in Strasbourg.

Launch of the Children’s Rights Information Campaign in Strasbourg

Maud de Boer-Buquicchio, Deputy Secretary General and Roland Ries, the Mayor of Strasbourg participated in the event marking the launch of the Council of Europe Information Campaign on Children’s Rights, taking place on 9 October in Strasbourg. The event sought to publicise the cooperation which the Council of Europe has undertaken with the City of Strasbourg in order to enable children and families discover the rights of the child in an understandable and enjoyable way.

''A lasting peace in Europe must be built on trust, co-operation and values''

On the occasion of the inauguration of the exhibition of the Statute of the Council of Europe and of the European Convention on Human Rights on 28 September, the acting Secretary General stressed that both texts were written in the belief that a lasting peace in Europe must be built on trust, co-operation and values, not walking on a tightrope of suspicion, intimidation and fear between nations, which had been the established practice in Europe before that day.
