"Seven years imprisonment for Ilgar Mammadov, Director of the Council of Europe school of political studies in Baku"
Statement by Jean-Marie Heydt, President of the Conference of INGOs, Strasbourg
19 March 2014
The President of the Conference of INGOs shares the concern and disappointment expressed by the international community following the sentencing of Ilgar Mammadov. We all appreciated his active commitment and the excellent co-operation we had with him for many years in the context of the schools of political studies.
To date we have no information as to how this judgment was reached. However, we would like to be assured that the sentence is in no way linked to his political activities. Given that Azerbaijan is about to take over the chairmanship of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe, we trust that the court ruled on facts that can be judged in accordance with ordinary law and not on the basis of some confusion that might be a violation of fundamental rights and the standards upheld by the Council of Europe with regard to NGOs and political commitment.
