Population
Before 2000 population accounting in Estonia was based on the 1989 Population Census data and the data of registered vital events. From 2000 onwards it is based on the results of the 2000 Population and Housing Census.
According to the data of the 1989 and 2000 censuses, the population decreased in the period between them by more than 12 % from 1 566 000 to 1 370 000. For the same period the expected decrease on the basis of the data of vital events was 8%. The main reason for this difference was the insufficient registration of migration in the period between the censuses. Yet this was a period of significant changes in migration processes. Due to the gap between the data of annual population accounting and the 2000 Population and Housing Census, the population data between censuses has been revised. The decrease in average population has an influence on all statistical estimates which are calculated on the basis of population numbers from 1990 to 1999.
At 1 January 2002 the estimated population was 1 361 242. In 2001 the population decreased by about 0.4% due to natural decrease. The population change includes only the natural increase.

Marriage and divorce
There were 5 647 marriages registered in 2001, which is an increase of 3 % over the previous year and is higher than the average of the last five years. The crude marriage rate was 4.1. 67 % of bridegrooms and 68 % of brides contracted their first marriage. Since the early 90s, the mean age at first marriage has increased. In 2001 it was 27.8 years for men and 25.2 years for women.
There were 4 312 divorces in 2001 – about 2 % more than in 2000. However, this number is lower than the average rate for the last five years. There were 764 divorces per 1 000 marriages in 2001. The divorce rate per 1 000 inhabitants was 3.2.
The proportion of repeatedly divorced persons increased both among men and women. The proportion of divorced couples with under 18-year-old children fell by 2.5 %.

Fertility
In 2001 the number of births was at almost the same level as the average number of births for the last five years. Compared to 2000, it was about 3 % lower but this could be due to the somewhat higher fertility in 2000.
In 2001 there were 12 629 births which is 439 less than in 2000. The crude birth rate was 9.3 and the total fertility rate – 1.34.
There were 1 071 boys per 1 000 girls among the newborn children. The number of multiple births was very high in 2001: 118 multiple births per 10 000 deliveries. This rate was also higher than average values in 1998 and 1999.
The share of births outside marriage has been rising continuously. In 2001 56.2 % of newborn children were born outside marriage, which is an increase of 1.7 % over the previous year. This does not mean that more than half the children were born to a single parent but rather it reflects the situation where cohabitation is preferred to a legal marriage.
In 2001 the mean age of mothers at childbirth and the mean age at birth of the first child were 27.2 and 24.2 years respectively. This is one year lower than age at first marriage for women.

Mortality
Mortality was quite stable between 1999 and 2001. The crude death rate in 2001 was 13.6. It was somewhat higher than in 2000 for men, but slightly lower for women. For more than half the deaths the cause was diseases of the circulatory system, followed by malignant neoplasms, injuries and poisonings. The order of causes of death did not change compared to the previous year.
The infant mortality rate and the number of stillbirths per 1 000 live births in 2001 were slightly higher compared to 2000, but still lower than in 1999. There were about 8.8 infant deaths and 5.5 stillborn children per 1 000 live births. Since 1992, when the World Health Organisation (WHO) definition of live birth was adopted in Estonia, these two rates have declined considerably.

Migration
The migration data will not be published as these data do not cover all the migration events and the recommended definitions on migration statistics cannot be used for the data on registered changes of the place of residence. Therefore, the population change includes only the natural increase.

Demographic projections
Projections of the population size or composition on the basis of the new census have not yet been undertaken.
