Recent Demographic Developments in Europe

The Council of Europe’s report on "Recent demographic developments in Europe" covers all its 46 member states 1, and 1 non-member state 2. In the search for sustainable human development, population issues play a central role in society. Decisions concerning social welfare, economic development, health, education, local and regional planning are either influenced by, or are a direct result of demographic factors. Population trends are in turn affected by the demographic impact of political decisions. The analyses and data presented in the report will help a wide range of researchers, policy-makers, administrators and the general public to find answers to such questions as: Is migration compensating for the decrease in natural population growth in Europe? Is the demographic transition accelerating in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe? Will the ageing of Europe’s population and changing family patterns challenge our existing welfare system?

The report consists of two parts: an introduction with an executive summary, and a Europe-wide comparative review. The introduction provides a general assessment of the demographic trends in Europe. The comparative part presents, in tables and graphs, the main demographic indicators in all the forty-six countries included in this volume: population (size and growth), net migration, marriage, divorce, fertility, mortality and foreign population. New for this year is an accompanying interactive CD-Rom, which contains country-specific data including a brief description of the developments in each country (sometimes with projections), pyramids describing the age structure of the population and detailed time-series data tables for each demographic indicator.

The members of the European Population Committee are responsible for the data and the reports supplied by their states. The National Statistical Offices of non-member states of the Council of Europe have also supplied the data and reports concerning their countries.
