Conventions
The Council of Europe has adopted a number of conventions to control the use of animals by humans:
the European Convention for the protection of animals during international transport (ETS No. 65) and the Revised European Convention for the protection of animals during international transport (ETS No. 193)
the European Convention for the protection of animals kept for farming purposes (ETS No. 87) and the Protocol of Amendment to the European Convention for the Protection of Animals kept for Farming Purposes (ETS No 145, not entered into force)
the European Convention for the protection of animals for slaughter (ETS No. 102);
the European Convention for the protection of vertebrate animals used for experimental and other scientific purposes (ETS No. 123) and the Protocol of Amendment to the European Convention for the Protection of Vertebrate Animals used for Experimental and other Scientific Purposes (ETS No. 170)
the European Convention for the protection of pet animals (ETS No. 125)
Compliance with these conventions is monitored through multilateral consultation and, in the case of ETS No. 87, by a Standing Committee.
