Migration: Setting up a forum for regular consultation between countries of origin and host countries

Officials responsible for migration issues in the 45 Council of Europe member states want to set up a forum within the Organisation bringing together the countries of origin, transit and destination, as a means of implementing common and co-ordinated policies in this field. At the same time, a “European Migration Agency” would be responsible for the practical management of these activities, explained Gabriella Battaini-Dragoni, Director General of Social Cohesion in the Council of Europe.

Maud de Boer-Buquicchio: migration and integration policies should be based on human rights principles

Opening the Malta Conference on migration in the Mediterranean, the Council of Europe's Deputy Secretary General spoke of the need for ''orderly migration, social cohesion and respect for the individual''. She called for dialogue between countries of origin, transit and destination, so that migrants could enjoy proper legal protection for their basic rights, and said that the conference would discuss the establishment of a political forum for countries of migrant origin and destination and an agency to implement the Council of Europe’s migration management strategy.
