THE COUNCIL OF EUROPE CALLS FOR
COMPREHENSIVE FILM POLICIES
|
The Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe adopted on 23 September Recommendation (2009) 7 on film policies and the diversity of cultural expressions. This recommendation, which is a non-binding international legal instrument, encourages film policy bodies in the 47 member states of the Council of Europe to adapt their projects to current technological and cultural changes and to optimise the use of resources in order to increase circulation and audience numbers.

Other versions
The White Paper provides various orientations for the promotion of intercultural dialogue, mutual respect and understanding, based on the core values of the Organisation. The Ministers welcomed it as a “significant pan-European contribution to an international discussion steadily gaining momentum” as well as to the European Year of Intercultural Dialogue.

Building partnerships for Citizenship and Human Rights Education
|
On 9-10 October 2008, a Forum on “Civic Partnerships for Citizenship and Human Rights Education” will be organised by the Council of Europe in Strasbourg in the framework of the Swedish Presidency of the Committee of Ministers. Partnerships between governments, regional and local authorities, civil society organisations and other relevant actors are essential for effective promotion of EDC/HRE.

Dialogue in action - Conference of Ministers responsible for Culture
|
“Intercultural dialogue as a basis for peace and sustainable development in Europe and its neighbouring regions” is the topic of a Conference of Ministers responsible for Culture that will take place in Baku, Azerbaijan, on 2 – 3 December 2008. Following the publication of the Council of Europe’s White Paper on Intercultural Dialogue, the conference moves from the theory to the practice of dialogue by bringing together Ministers from European countries and neighbouring regions. A fund and a number of practical follow-up co-operation activities in the cultural field may be launched as a partnership between different organisations and institutions.

A new sport website: Enlarged Partial Agreement on Sport (EPAS)

EPAS aims to promote sport and emphasise its positive values, to establish international standards and develop a framework for a pan-European platform of intergovernmental sports co-operation while at the same time helping the public authorities of member States of the EPAS, sports federations and NGOs to promote sport and make it healthier, fairer and better governed.
