Privacy: Back to the future

24 September 2013

6.45 - 8 pm.

Guests only

The Council of Europe and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) will jointly organise a side-event to the 35th International Conference of Data Protection and Privacy Commissioners, hosted by the Polish General Inspectorate for Data Protection (GIODO), in order to recall the long-standing contributions of both organisations in the field of privacy.

More than three decades ago, both the OECD and the Council of Europe were already working on promoting respect for privacy as a fundamental right and a condition for the free flow of personal data across borders.

The cornerstone of OECD work on privacy is its newly revised Guidelines on the Protection of Privacy and Transborder Flows of Personal Data (2013) while the Council of Europe currently modernises the only international treaty which regulates this field : Convention 108

As was the case 30 years ago, both organisations continue to provide their expertise and added-value to the discussions, bringing the fundamental right to privacy to a new era, an era of global communication.

Directed by Anne Carblanc, OECD, and Sophie Kwasny, Council of Europe
