[25/06/2014] A meeting on the non accepted provisions of the European Social Charter by Azerbaijan was held in Baku today.  Two members of the European Committee of Social Rights, Mr. Lauri Leppi et M. Ruchan Isik participated in this meeting, as well as Mr. Ramon Prieto-Suarez, legal officer in the Department of the European Social Charter.

Meeting in Moscow to allow for an exchange of views on conclusions with respect to the Russian Federation

[27/05/2014] A meeting was held in Moscow on 27 May 2014 allowing for an exchange of views covering specific provisions where the European Committee of Social Rights has found the Russian Federation not to be in compliance with the rights enshrined in the Charter as well as cases in which the Committee was unable to reach a decision due to insufficient information. Three members of the European Committe of Social Rights, Mr Petros Stangos, Vice President, Ms Elena Machulskaya and Ms Eliane Chemla, participated in this meeting, as well as Mr. Régis Brillat, Head of the Department of the European Social Charter and Mr. Ramon Prieto Suarez, legal officer.

[25/04/2014] An academic forum entitled "Foro Experto los Derechos sociales en Europa/Espana/Andalucia", organised by the Centro de Estudios Andaluces of the University of Sevilla, was held on 25 April 2014.  Two members of the European Committee of Social Rights, Prof. Luis Jimena Quesada, President, and Mr. Petros Stangos, Vice President, participated in this event, as well as Mr Régis Brillat, Head of the Department of the European Social Charter.

Workshop on the Social Charter in Valencia

[09/04/2014] A workshop dedicated to the promotion and awareness-raising of the European Social Charter, organised by the Spanish trade union UGT, was held in Valencia, Spain, on 9 April 2014. Prof. Luis Jimena Quesada, President of the European Committee of Social Rights, participated in this workshop and gave a presentation of the role of the Committee and the impact of the Social Charter in Spain.

[08/04/2014] A Conference  entitled “Stateless but not Rightless: Improving the Protection of Stateless Persons in Europe”, jointly organised by the European Network on Statelessness and the UNHCR Representation to the European Institutions was held in Strasbourg on 8 April.2014.  Mr. Henrik Kristenssen, Deputy Head of the European Social Charter participated in this conference.

Colloquy on the condition of Roma in Italy

[03/04/2014] The association 21 Luglio has organised a colloquy under the patronage of the European Commission on 3, 4 and 5 April 2014, focussing on the condition of Roma in Italy. The main objective of this colloquy is to attain a better understanding of the social and legal condition of Roma communities and to achieve a wider application of the national Roma integration strategy adopted by Italy on 28 February 2012. Prof. Luis Jimena Quesada, President of the European Committee of Social Rights spoke on the social rights of vulnerable persons

The Committee of Ministers adopts changes to the reporting and monitoring system with respect to the European Social Charter

On 2 April 2014, the Committee of Ministers adopted changes to the reporting and monitoring system with respect to the European Social Charter. The changes are to be put in place with immediate effect. The most important aim of the changes is to simplify the national reporting mechanism for State Parties having accepted the collective complaints procedure.

Hearing on the Committee's decision in LO/TCO v. Sweden, Complaint No. 85/2012

[26/03/2014] A hearing on the Committee's decision in LO/TCO v. Sweden, Complaint No. 85/2012, was organised by the Swedish Parliamentary Committee responsible for re-considering/ reviewing the Swedish legislation to implement the CJEU decision in the Laval case, Stockholm (Sweden). Two members of the European Committee of Social Rights, Ms Birgitta Nyström et Mr Giuseppe Palmisano, attended the audition, as well as Mr Henrik Kristensen, Deputy Head of the Department of the European Social Charter.

Conclusions 2013 of the European Committee of Social Rights are public

[29/01/2014]  It is now possible to consult Conclusions 2013 and XX-2 (2013) of the European Committee of Social Rights on the implementation of the European Social Charter. In 2013, the Committee adopted some 570 conclusions, including some 180 findings of violations de la Charter, pertaining to health, social security and social protection.  (more information)

The Secretary General of the Council of Europe calls for better protection of social rights in times of austerity

[28/01/2014] M.Thorbjørn Jagland declares that "the need to protect everyday rights for workers and non-working people is a core European value which becomes all the more important when times are tough. .."   and  encourages the member States of the Council of Europe who have not yet done so to ratify the Revised Charter and to adhere to the collective complaint procedure.

The 269th session of the European Committee of Social Rights in Brussels

The European Committee of Social Rights held its 269th session from 27 to 29 January 2014 in the Council of Europe Office in Brussels, Belgium. A number of events were organised to take place during this session, including a press briefing on the Committee’s Conclusions 2013 and XX-2, relating to health, social security and social protection. The briefing was held in the Council of Europe Office, 85, Avenue des Nerviens, on Wednesday 29 January.
