International Work

Member of ECRI in respect of Italy.
Served as an ad hoc judge at the European Court of Human Rights.
Former member of the European Committee for the Prevention of Torture and Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment.
Former head of the Italian delegation to the Council of Europe Steering Committee for Human Rights.
Former member of the Bureau of the European Committee for Crime Problems.
Chairman of several other expert committees, including the Select Committee on Violence in Present-Day Society.
Involved in the drafting of several Council of Europe Conventions, including Protocol Nos 11 and 14 of the European Convention of Human Rights, and Committee of Ministers’ resolutions and recommendations.
Head of the Italian delegation to the Diplomatic Conference on the Statute of the International Criminal Court (New York, 1992-1998).

Honours

Awarded Ministry of Justice Honour Diploma of second degree for social redemption because of his work on the re-education and rehabilitation of prisoners, inmates, and maladjusted minors, and on assistance to convicts released from prison (Decree of the Minister of Justice of 27 April 1973).
