Council of Europe holds conference on free and fair media during the 2013 presidential elections in Georgia
On 29 August 2013, at the Courtyard Hotel in Tbilisi, the Council of Europe, with the financial support of the Swiss Government, organised a conference on "The Role of Free and Fair Media during the 2013 Presidential Elections". The conference brought together media companies and associations - both national    and regional, local and international organisations, diplomatic missions, and international media experts.  Conference participants discussed the challenges and opportunities for the Georgian media to adequately cover the upcoming Presidential elections, the international legal framework governing media coverage of elections, and the international standards and best practices that need to be introduced in Georgia. Caterina Bolognese, Head of the Council of Europe Office in Georgia, in her opening remarks noted that "media professionalism is not only about making well-produced, well-prepared news or talk shows, it is above all about providing news which is balanced, objective and allows the public to listen to alternative points of view. This is all the more important in an electoral context, when it's the media's role to help voters make an informed choice on whom to vote for".
