1st meeting of the European Committee on Democracy and Governance (CDDG)

 

[04-04-2014] - The 1st meeting of the European Committee on Democracy and Governance (CDDG) took place in Strasbourg from 3 to 4 April 2014.

The meeting was opened by Thorbjørn Jagland, Secretary General of the Council of Europe.

The CDDG is responsible for overseeing the Council of Europe’s intergovernmental work in the field of democratic governance.

Committee members shared information and good practices on issues concerning citizen participation and citizen engagement, public administration reform and modernisation, as well as the promotion of accountability and the improvement of standards for local service provision.

Oscar Söderström, State Secretary for EU, Consumer and Democracy Affairs, SwedenOn-going administrative reforms were introduced with respect to Ireland by Mr Phil Hogan, Minister for the Environment, Community and Local Government, and Ukraine by Mr Vyacheslav Nehoda, First Deputy Minister of Regional Development. A presentation on citizen participation in public life and politics in Sweden was given by Mr Oscar Söderström, State Secretary for EU, Consumer and Democracy Affairs in the light of the government’s communication "A policy for a living democracy".

The Committee elected a Chair (Mr Paul-Henri Philips, Belgium), Vice-Chair (Mr Paul Rowsell, United Kingdom) and Bureau members (Mr Alexander Balthasar, Austria ; Mr Francesco Giustino, Italy; Ms Greta Ulland Billing, Norway ; Ms Paqui Santonja, Spain (for two years); and Ms Desislava Dragova, Bulgaria for one year).

The Committee also appointed Mr Edwin Lefebre (Belgium) and Ms Hannah Brook (United Kingdom) as rapporteurs for Gender Equality, and Ms Laurence Gindt (Belgium) as rapporteur for Children’s Rights.
