Administrative History:

The collection known as the "Audiovisual Archive" was created de facto by a decision of the Secretary General Terry Davis in 2007 to move the audiovisual material under the responsibility of the Directorate of Information Technology. The sound, video and film material were moved from their production site in the Directorate of Communication to the Central Archives. The photo archive still remains under the responsibility of its production department.

Covers Council of Europe activities from 1949 to the present. Comprises:

- audio recordings of the speeches from all sessions of the Parliamentary Assembly and the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe, and from some European Parliament sessions;

- recordings of press conferences and radio broadcasts;

- interviews with leading figures from contemporary history.

Copy on demand via Archive helpdesk; a project for making these files accessible online is in process.

The files are arranged chronologically. Major programme of reorganisation, digitisation and preservation is underway.
