Global
Education Week-14-22 November 2009
Each year in November, the North-South Centre of the
Council of Europe encourages educational stakeholders from formal and
non-formal settings to organize awareness-raising activities tackling
global citizenship. These activities are relayed by the GEW network
national coordinators and are posted on the site in order to
facilitate the sharing of good practices. This year theme is Food for
All.

Lisbon
Forum 2009
The main aim of the 2009 Lisbon Forum is to promote
the creation of a culture of human rights, through
“quadrilogue” action, i.e. governments,
parliamentarians, local and regional authorities and
civil society.
This year the Forum is taking place on 13-14 of
November, in the Centre Ismaili in Lisbon, Portugal.

Course for Youth Leaders of the African Diaspora Living in Europe 6
– 12 December 2009 – Almada, Lisbon, Portugal
Youth organisations and youth groups from the African
Diaspora living in Europe are fundamental actors for the
Euro-African Youth Cooperation. The Youth from the African Diaspora
was a key participatory element in the process leading to the Africa
Europe Youth Summit and the Summit itself.

Aware Education Award - 2009 edition
The North-South Centre of the Council
of Europe has launched the World Aware Education Awards (WAEA). The
WAEA seek to recognise and encourage initiatives which display
excellence or innovation in networking, partnership and coordination
for increased and improved global education. Laureate projects have
been nominated.

Paper on Intercultural Dialogue in Portuguese
The Portuguese version of the White Paper on Intercultural Dialogue of
the Council of Europe, produced by the North-South Centre, is now
available. It contains a preface by Jorge Sampaio, UN High
Representative for the Alliance of Civilizations, and will be
presented for the first time during the 2nd Forum of the
Alliance of Civilizations that will take place on 6-7 April in
Istanbul.

The North-South Centre celebrates the 20th
anniversary of its creation
The North-South Centre was created on 16 November 1989
through Resolution 89(14) of the Committee of Ministers
of the Council of Europe. A reception was offered by the
Permanent Representative of Portugal in Strasbourg to
commemorate the 20th Anniversary of this decision. On
this occasion, the following declarations were made

The Secretary General was one of the keynote speaker at “Breaking Borders
“, an event on freedom of expression on the Internet that
commemorated the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall,
on the 3 November. During the event, Google launched a YouTube channel
on freedom of expression.
