Green-light for the accession of Cape Verde to the North-South Centre

On 9 December 2009, the Committee of Ministers, on the basis of the request addressed on 11 November by the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Cape Verde to the Secretary General of the Council of Europe, adopted a positive decision in principle regarding the accession of Cape Verde to the North-South Centre. Since then, the statutory consultation of the North-South Centre member States which are not members of the Council of Europe has taken place, and the Holy See and Morocco have both supported this request. Therefore, the invitation addressed to Cape Verde to join the North-South Centre is final on the occasion of the meeting of the Ministers' Deputies, today, on 13 January.

The date of entry into force of this accession will subsequently be fixed, in consultation with the authorities of Cape Verde. It will mark a very important new step politically as the North-South Centre will welcome not only its 2nd non-European member State (after Morocco), but also its first member State from Sub-Saharan Africa.
