GLOBAL EDUCATION WEEK 2007

EVALUATION & PLANNING FEEDBACK FORM

1. PLEASE INDICATE THE MAJOR ACHIEVEMENT OF THE GEW 2007 IN YOUR COUNTRY

In 2007 a good awareness of Global Education Week was recognisable: NGOs, schools, etc. showed interest and have been contacting World University Service (WUS). Participating institutions of former years as well as new ones offered activities. More newsletters (online and print) than in the previous year announced the GEW. The mutual promotion of other events and GEW on the respective homepages worked out well.

2. PLEASE INDICATE OBSTACLES FOR A SOUND IMPLEMENTATION OF GEW

    · Especially schools and teachers require a provided structure: someone else organising something for them. On the other hand they demand for activities without expenses. Probably they feel that they don’t have the time or are not able to develop activities themselves.
    · Lack of financial and human resources since the EU-funded WUS-project: “Global Learning in dialogue” expired in March 2006.

3. HOW IS THE GEW COORDINATED NATIONALLY?

On behalf of VENRO (the umbrella organisation for German NGO’s), World University Service (WUS) is the coordinating organisation in Germany and is supported by other organisations which help disseminate information.

IS THERE ANY OFFICIAL COORDINATING STRUCTURE?

    Yes, WUS

OR A GLOBAL EDUCATION NATIONAL PLATFORM?

    No

WHICH ARE YOUR MAIN PARTNERS AT NATIONAL LEVEL? AND INTERNATIONAL LEVEL?

    · On national level we are cooperating with VENRO, and different organisations all over the country. Any organisation may participate with an activity on Global Learning.
    · We set a link to the homepage of NSC and emphasized the European scope of Global Education Week.
    · We published information about the GEW in Slovakia on our homepage (in Slovakian and German).
    · We received a request from Haiti.

4. HAS ANY WEBSITE ON GLOBAL EDUCATION WEEK ACTIVITIES OR RESOURCES BEEN DEVELOPED IN YOUR COUNTRY? IF SITE EXISTS PLEASE SHARE ITS WEB-ADDRESS.

http://www.wusgermany.de/index.php?id=24&L=

5. PLEASE REPORT ON NETWORKING AND/OR COORDINATION STRATEGIES DEVELOPED DURING THE GEW (INSTITUTIONAL LEVEL / LOCAL AUTHORITIES / EDUCATIONAL & YOUTH STRUCTURES / CIVIL SOCIETY / MEDIA)

Our homepage served as information and exchange platform, we promoted GEW in online and print newsletters and journals, we directly contacted NGO’s and schools via e-mail. We cooperated with the GEW coordinator in Slovakia: Milan Sindler
Good results have been achieved through placing an announcement on the homepages of other big events related to Global Learning in autumn like the BREBIT (development education days of the federal state of Brandenburg) or the SEBIT (development education days of the federal state of Sachsen).

6. AFTER THE WEEK, ANY COMMENTS ON THE THEME CHOICE FOR GEW 2007 (RELEVANCE, ADAPTABILITY, CHANGES MADE TO THEME AT NATIONAL LEVEL, USEFULNESS FOR ACTIVITIES WITH DIFFERENT AGE RANGES, SECTORS, ETC. )

The theme has been rather wide and general. This facilitated the accomplishment of suitable activities, at least as long as WUS is not able to provide more resources.

7. PLEASE REPORT, IF POSSIBLE, RELEVANT QUANTITATIVE RESULTS CONCERNING THE GEW IN YOUR COUNTRY (I.E. NUMBER OF SCHOOLS - CLASSES, PUPILS, TEACHERS INVOLVED; YOUTH ORGANISATIONS OR GROUPS, YOUNG PEOPLE OR YOUTH WORKERS/LEADERS; CONFERENCES; TRAINING EVENTS; NEWS FEATURES; MATERIALS PRODUCED, RELATED FIGURES AND DISSEMINATION, ETC.)

We regret not being able due to our resources to evaluate the results and so do not get much feedback from the organisations concerning the realisation of events, workshops etc.

    · We were able to present 16 different activities on our homepage: one by WUS and the others by our cooperation partners
    · We contacted 120 schools, teachers and educational institutions by e-mail to invite them to participate
    · We contacted 134 NGO’s and other organisations via e-mail which deal with Global Education to invite them to participate
    · We sent a press release via e-mail to 582 contact addresses of press and media institutions

8. PLEASE REPORT RELEVANT QUALITATIVE INFORMATION CONCERNING THE IMPACT OF THE GEW IN YOUR COUNTRY (I.E. TYPE OF STRATEGIES, METHODS, PROJECTS; REACTIONS AND SUGGESTIONS BY TEACHERS, PUPILS, YOUTH ORGANISATIONS; LOCAL COMMUNITIES; EDUCATIONAL AUTHORITIES, MINISTRY OF EDUCATION; OPPORTUNITIES FOR CO-OPERATION AMONG NGOS, TEACHERS ETC.)

see answer to nr. 7 above
whereas organisations and institutions in the domain of Global Learning are apt to participate in GEW and know about this week, schools want activities already prepared for them.

9. FOR GLOBAL EDUCATION WEEK 2007,

· IS THERE A THEME-CHOOSING PROCESS AT NATIONAL LEVEL; IF SO, CAN YOU DESCRIBE IT FOR THE BENEFIT OF OTHER COUNTRIES THAT DO NOT HAVE SUCH A PROCESS?

No

· ARE THERE ANY THEMES ALREADY EMERGING FOR THE WEEK AT NATIONAL LEVEL – IF SO, WHICH THEMES?

In Germany for 2008 the themes ‘water and sanitation’ within the UN-decade as well as ‘60. anniversary of human rights’ seem to become prominent.

10. ARE THERE ANY EXISTING OR PLANNED EDUCATIONAL MATERIALS THAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO SHARE WITH THE NETWORK?

Not really educational material but…
The English translation of our pdf on ‘Development work of the German Länder’ (Länder meaning federal states) is online now: http://www.wusgermany.de/index.php?id=1239&L=

11. GIVE CONCRETE EXAMPLES ON HOW THE NORTH-SOUTH CENTER HAS BEEN USEFUL IN FACILITATING THE GLOBAL EDUCATION WEEK IN YOUR COUNTRY;

The seminar in Portugal was very useful to exchange information and experiences for me as a newcomer.
The GEW homepage of NSC contains useful information and incitation for realising activities.

12. PLEASE INDICATE HOW NORTH-SOUTH CENTRE COULD IMPROVE ITS ACTIONS IN SUPPORTING YOUR WORK IN GEW IN YOUR COUNTRY AND AT THE EUROPEAN LEVEL.

Disseminating information and requests at an early stage so that one might consider things and react in an appropriate way.

13. PLEASE DO SUGGEST IDEAS FOR IMPROVING THE GEW PREPARATORY PROCESS; THE GEW WEBPAGE AND THE GLOBAL EDUCATION NEWSLETTER

    · The motto and the date should be determined earlier, e.g. in the beginning of 2008 for 2009. This would make it easier to plan and promote activities.
    · Financial support would be wonderful…
    · The webpage of the NSC should be updated regularly but especially right in time before GEW begins!

Thank you for your encouragement and sharing!
