History teaching in perspective
The main overarching component parts of the Council of Europe are the Committee of Ministers, the Parliamentary Assembly, and the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities. More detail is available on the Council of Europe's main website.
They issue recommendations and resolutions which are non-binding texts, but which are nevertheless important standard setting documents.
Steering committee for Education
The Council of Europe's history teaching programme is overseen by the Steering Committee for Education (CDED).
This committee is composed of representatives from the ministries of education of countries signatory to the European Cultural Convention (forty-eight countries).
For the period 2008-2009, the committee is chaired by Roy Chourdaki (Greece); and as vice-chair Alida Matkovic (Croatia). They are assisted by a Bureau composed of 6 members.
Note that the Steering Committee for Education replaces the Council for Cultural Co-operation (CDCC) since 2001, which was responsible for the Council of Europe's work on education and culture in earlier days. One of the four specialised committees that helped the CDCC carry out its tasks under the European Cultural Convention was the Education Committee, overlooking the work of the history teaching division.
