A conference to mark the official launching of the European Union/Council of Europe Joint Programme “Supporting Education Policies in Democratic Citizenship and Human Rights Education in Kazakhstan” was held on 20-21 September 2013 in Astana.
This event generated great interest with over a hundred participants from schools and universities from different parts of Kazakhstan, Ministry of Education and Science, representatives of teachers’ associations and other institutions.
The speakers presented the Council of Europe work in the field of Education
for Democratic Citizenship and Human Rights Education, the guidelines and
manuals on EDC/HRE and the concept of piloting of EDC/HRE materials in schools.

This project was developed as a follow-up to the ratification by Kazakhstan of the European Cultural Convention, and targets to support education reforms conducive to intercultural awareness and understanding, based on the principles of human rights and democracy. The project is implemented by the Council of Europe in close co-operation with the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
This Joint Programme will not only allow dissemination of the outcomes of the Council of Europe activities in the field of EDC/HRE in Kazakhstan, but will also ensure better co-operation in the field of education to promote greater unity of Kazakhstan with the Council of Europe member states in the field of education.
Our next event within the framework of this Joint Programme will take place on 13-14 November 2013 in Pavlodar. It will be a seminar on the role of higher education in promoting a culture of democracy and human rights.
