Forum: Cultural values for Europe

Closing event of the two-year project Cultural Identities, Shared Values and Citizenship - Council of Europe and Cinema l’Odyssée, Strasbourg, 3 December 2007

The defence and promotion of human rights, democracy and the rule of law are the principal aims of the Council of Europe. How can culture and the understanding of heritage contribute to a better awareness in Europe of these fundamental values and encourage their implementation in order to live together more harmoniously? A group of experts has outlined responses to these questions on the relations which could be established between “cultural identities, shared values and citizenship”. This work has led to texts presented and discussed on 3 December 2007. The forum involved specialists who have contributed to this project and speakers from the sectors of culture, education, human rights, social affairs and youth.

The Programme of 3 December ended with a Round Table on multiple cultural affiliation: an opportunity for Europe ? open to the public at the Odyssée Cinema, bringing together artists and intellectuals from different backgrounds who discussed the themes dealt with during the day. It was organised with the cooperation of the magazine Les Saisons d’Alsace.
