The topic of the EHD in 2011 "Value of heritage for society" refers to the fact that the protection and enhancement of cultural heritage is an integral part of the life of local communities. The opening ceremony of the EHD is each year held in a different historic city and is traditionally combined with the ceremony of awarding prizes for significant activities in the protection of cultural heritage. In 2011, the EHD started on 8th September in the town of Bardejov and continued within the whole country until 30th September. The European Heritage Days hosted a great variety of events, such as presentations, exhibitions, "Open Days", concerts, seminars. For young people of up to 21 years was organized a competition Photo-experiences with Monuments.

The main aim of the Heritage Days 2010 in Slovakia is to increase public awareness of specific heritage types: technical and industrial monuments. Water mills, manufacturing workshops, railway facilities and metallurgy buildings will open their doors for groups from schools and other visitors. Also, guided tours of mining tunnels and towers, water reservoirs and historical bridges will be offered. Young people will be invited to participate in the competition of their photographs of monuments. The local organisers will prepare a number of events, seminars, exhibitions, concerts, etc.
