Description
This year Open Monumentendag - the Dutch Heritage Day - celebrates its 25th anniversary. This anniversary year is marked with a contemporary theme: Reuse of Historic Buildings. The theme features historic buildings that have been given a new function, a new purpose, a new lease of life. In the weekend of 10 and 11 September 2011, many of these striking and distinctive buildings will open their doors to the public.
At a time when the focus is turning to recycling and reuse, the theme Reuse of Historic Buildings has additional relevance. Relocation of production, disaffection with religion and new health and hygiene requirements are just some of the factors that have left many buildings standing empty. It concerns all types of buildings: rural heritage and office blocks, industrial heritage and housing, military heritage and public buildings, and of course religious heritage. Many of these historic buildings have long dominated their villages or towns. They are literally in the centre of town, a church for example, or they provided work for local residents for years. To give them a new purpose maintains the link with history and preserves these historic buildings.
Reuse of historic buildings is not something new. Over the centuries, new uses have been found for historical monuments such as weigh houses, warehouses, monasteries and forts after they lost their original purpose. The edifices themselves were preserved and in their new role they have added a new chapter to the story of the place, the neighbourhood or the town.

Description
This year’s European Heritage Day in the Netherlands, on the weekend
of 12 and 13 September, is on the theme of maps. Activities will
focus on all kinds of topographical documents, including maps,
charts, urban expansion projects and other town plans, as well as
the historical monuments they depict. Many of these monuments are
striking buildings located in remarkable settings that have often
been portrayed in townscapes and engravings, on postcards and other
artworks. On the Map turns the spotlight on urban architecture and
focuses on the connection between buildings and their environment.
On the Map features a huge diversity of open historical buildings.
Committees organising local Heritage Day activities will highlight
buildings that were the first to appear on maps, such as churches,
monasteries, town gates and castles, as well as other interesting
buildings in interesting locations. Attention will also be paid to
buildings that were put on the map by the municipality or central
government when they were designated as a local or national
historical monument. The theme also encompasses protected town and
village views, cultural-historical tourist maps, cartographical
sources and much besides.
The Netherlands will be participating for the twelfth consecutive
year in the International Heritage Photographic Experience organised
as part of the European Heritage Days. Young people aged between 10
and 18 are invited to enter their photos of historical monuments.
The winning photos will appear in a European catalogue. The European
Heritage Day in the Netherlands also features youth activities such
as treasure hunts, drawing competitions, children’s tours,
story-telling and living history performances in historical
costumes.
