Biogeographical seminar for the implementation of the Emerald Network
2 - 4 November 2011
Strasbourg (France)
This Emerald Network Biogeographical Seminar for six West Balkan countries, co-organised by the European Topic Centre on
Biological Diversity of the European Environment Agency and the Council of Europe, will take place in Bar, Montenegro.
It follows on from the preparatory seminar which was held in Paris on 26-27 January this year.
The purpose of the meeting is to assess at a biogeographical level the extend to which the candidate Emerald sites proposed
by each individual country (Albania, Bosnia Herzegovina, Croatia, Montenegro, Serbia and the Former Yugoslav Republic
of Macedonia) are sufficient to ensure proper conservation of habitats and species listed respectively in Resolutions
4 (1996) and 6 (1998) of the Bern Convention and to address further needs for site proposals to complete the Emerald network.
This phase is a necessary step before sites can be officially approved as ASCIs by the Standing Committee to the Bern
Convention and designated at national level. The seminar will be chaired by Mr Jan Plesnik, Chair of the Bern Convention
Standing Committee, while the discussions on each targeted species and habitats will be facilitated by experts from the
European Topic Centre on Biological Diversity (ETC/BD).
