Young
journalists at the "Assises
Internationales du Journalisme"
For the second consecutive year, the
Council of Europe is hosting the
"Assises Internationales du Journalisme
et de l'Information". The event, held
from the 16 to 18 November in the Palais
de l'Europe and other venues around
Strasbourg, is France's largest
gathering of journalists.
In a joint operation between the
Speak out Against Discrimination
Campaign and the European Youth Press,
15 young journalists from this pan-European
association were given the task of
reporting on the event. Their reports
had to take into account the themes of
the campaign: the fight against
discrimination through the media and the
promotion of intercultural dialogue.

Don’t let us be offside! " - 17
November in Strasbourg
Organised
within the framework of the Assises
internationales du Journalisme and in
cooperation with the Enlarged Partial
Agreement of the Council of Europe on
Sport (EPAS) this debate which will take
place in Strasbourg the 17 November from
2-4.30 pm, will include the presentation
of two film clips: "Sports and
homosexuality, what's the problem?",
directed by Michel Royer Agency CAPA and
broadcasted by French Channel Canal + on
October 4, 2010 and Inside Incredible
Athletes, produced by Renegade
Pictures and distributed in the UK by
Channel 4 TV in August 2010.

13-14 Septembre 2010 - 2010 Exchange on
the religious dimension of
intercultural dialogue (Ohrid)
“The
role of the media in promoting
intercultural dialogue, tolerance and
mutual understanding: freedom of
expression in the media and respect for
cultural and religious diversity” is
the choice of the 2010 Exchange
on the religious dimension of
intercultural dialogue, organised by the
Committee of Ministers.
The choice of the theme, is one aspect
of the action undertaken by the
Committee of Ministers in the field of
intercultural dialogue and has also been
influenced by the achievements of the
Council of Europe’s “Speak Out Against
Discrimination Campaign” launched two
years ago, whose primary objective has
been to work with, for and through media
professionals, in accordance with the
recommendations of the White Paper on
Intercultural Dialogue. |

30 August - 3 September 2010 - Pilot
Encounter Journalism training, Discrimination and Diversity
(Portugal)
This Pilot Encounter targeted trainers of
European journalism training schools and
organisations. Jointly organised by the
Fundamental Rights Agency of the
European Union (FRA) and the Council of
Europe, this encounter was held from
30 August to 3 September at the
University of Coimbra (Portugal) and
aimed mainly at introducing and testing
the training pack "Journalism training,
Discrimination and Diversity" still
under construction.

8 June 2010: Palermo Conference on Fight
against discrimination.
(Italia)
In his opening speech at the Council of
Europe conference on the fight against discrimination, taking place on 8 June
2010 in Palermo, Piero Gottuso, president of the Palermo’s 7th
district recalled Sicily’s thousand-year long tradition of harmonious
coexistence of different cultures and traditions.The Deputy Secretary General,
Maud de Boer Buquicchio, in her message, stressed that discrimination
should never be tolerated. The conference further focused on the Council of
Europe’s White Paper on Intercultural Dialogue.
The conference also marked the launch of the Council of Europe
anti-discrimination campaign in Palermo, aiming at raising awareness of the
public with regard to this phenomenon.

21 May 2010: World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development
Further to the adoption of UNESCO’s Universal Declaration on Cultural
Diversity in November 2001, the General Assembly of the United Nations
proclaimed 21 May as World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and
Development (Resolution 57/249).
The Day will provide us with an opportunity to deepen understanding of the
values of Cultural Diversity and to learn to “live together” better. This is why
UNESCO appeals to the Member States as well as to all civil society to celebrate
this World Day by involving as many actors and partners as possible. |

The Hungarian press reports on the Campaign
Beside the
Training European workshop organized jointly with the Fundamental Rights Agency of the EU (FRA), 23-26 February, the Campaign’s team gave a press conference with the Hungarian press (newspapers, public radio / television), among which some minority programs were representatives, in particular Roma. 23-26 February 2010 – A workshop
for sharing journalism training
practices – European Youth Centre –
Budapest
After a workshop held in Strasbourg, a meeting was jointly organized by the Council of Europe and the Fundamental Rights Agency (FRA) in Vienna. The aim of this new workshop which followed both was to share journalism training practices related to intercultural and antidiscrimination issues. It focused mainly on the way of nuancing teaching to reach a diverse audience, including modules or assessments which necessitate a better understanding of antidiscrimination legislation or human rights law.

8-11 December
2009 - Bari conference focus on campaign:
The Italian city of Bari was on focus of campaigning thanks to a major conference that brought together members of the network of intercultural cities to see how new policies in city governance can increase diversity in local communities. Outdoor billboards and other public events brought the campaign to the city's population.

20-21 October 2009 - Lilian Thuram in Kosovo
France’s second-most capped football player, Lilian Thuram, has been visiting Kosovo to help educate young people about the dangers of racism and discrimination. The former defender at Juventus and FC Barcelona, visited the capital, Pristina and one of the oldest known settlements in Kosovo, the city of Mitrovica, as part of a move organised by the Council of Europe to help to bring different ethnic groups closer together. As president of the Education against Racism Foundation, Thuram has spent years campaigning to eradicate discrimination and xenophobia from communities.

9 October 2009 - International Journalism Symposium
The Council of Europe
hosted the 3rd International Journalism
Symposium on 7-9 October in Strasbourg.
Over 400 journalists, editors, press
magnates, students and teachers of
journalism, researchers and members of
the public discussed principles and
practices which may help to improve
standards in the news media.

Italy

2009 - Slovenia: Campaign activities
The anti-discrimination campaign started with a three month long outdoor campaign which covered the whole of the country. The national information office organised several debates and round table discussions highlighting the issue of discrimination. School children took part in a competition entitled 'Why diversity enriches us?' which enjoyed the support of Prime Minister Borut Pahor.

Palais de l'Europe was the subject

The Anti-Discrimination campaign was launched officially in Russia on 16 September by Gabriela Battaini-Dragoni, Director General of Education, Culture and Heritage, Youth and Sport. The campaign is endorsed by Russian footballer Andrei Arshavin.

August 2009 - Anti-discrimination media training workshop
Media professionals and trainers from journalism institutes representing 16 countries gathered at the European Youth Center in Strasbourg for a series of workshops between 26-28 August. They discussed media coverage as it relates to intercultural issues and discrimination and contributed to the development of the campaign's training pack.

August 2009 - Polish Woodstock rocks to the Anti Discrimination message
Some 450.000 people took up the Council of Europe’s call to ''Speak out against Discrimination'' during the 15th Przystanek Woodstock Festival at Kostrzyn on the Oder, from 31 July to 2 August. 25 volunteers staffed the stand promoting the Council of Europe’s anti-discrimination campaign with material distributed to more than 70.000 people. The campaign was highlighted in the media and associated with celebrities present at the concerts and debates, such as Lech Wałęsa, Tadeusz Mazowiecki, Michael Lang, and Jurek Owsiak, chief organiser of the Festival.

29 June 2009 - Campaign launched in Spain
On 29 June, the anti-discrimination campaign was launched in Madrid. The local council has endorsed the camapaign which uses some 220 billboards in an effort to raise awareness and promote good practice in the reporting of intercultural and discrimination-related issues among journalists.

20 March 2009 - Campaign launched in Romania
A Roma party and a round-table discussion were highlights of the campaign launch in Romania, organised by the Council of Europe's Bucharest Information Office, the National Council for Combating Discrimination and the National Council for Audiovisual. The campaign runs from 20 March to 20 July and aims to inform the public on the impact of discrimination and the ways it can be challenged. Campaigners will also encourage media professionals to be better prepared in reporting discrimination and cultural diversity and will seek parliamentary support in the fight against 'hate speech'

March 2009 - Anti-discrimination campaign in Slovenia
Some 400 billboard posters are bringing home the Council of Europe's anti-discrimination message to residents of Ljubljana and other Slovene towns.
The campaign which began in January and runs for three months, will also feature discussions on hate speech and other events organised by the country’s information office.
The Council of Europe has also joined forces with magazines aimed at children and teenagers to launch the 'Why Diversity Enriches Us' creative competition. On 24 March, the country's capital Ljubljana will host further 'Spaces of Diversity' events in support of the campaign 'Speak Out Against Discrimination.' Plans are also afoot to develop the campaign for project work in schools.

15 January 2009 - Anti Discrimination: Rai Uno highlights campaign (Italie)
Television station Rai Uno broadcast an interview with Gabriella Battaini-Dragoni following the launch of the Italian language version of the White Paper on Intercultural Dialogue in Rome.
The Director General of Education, Culture, Heritage, Youth and Sport visited the Italian capital for the event on 15 January and took part in a studio discussion on the Council of Europe and its campaign against discrimination.
She outlined the Organisation’s commitment to cultural pluralism and the fight against intolerance.

15 January 2009 - Intercultural Dialogue: Rome joins forces with the Council of Europe (Italy)
To mark the publication in Italian of the ''White Paper on Intercultural Dialogue'', a press conference was held on 15 January in the Camera dei Deputati (Chamber of Deputies) in Rome.
The White Paper on Intercultural Dialogue, entitled 'Living Together As Equals in Dignity,' was adopted by the Council of Europe Committee of Ministers on 7 May 2008, after a wide-ranging consultation process involving the governments of the Organisation's 47 member states. It was translated into Italian and produced by the Italian Ministry of Culture in conjunction with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

December /January - Poster campaigns in France and Slovenia
More than 125 billboard posters were displayed in Strasbourg (France) to highlight the anti-discrimation campaign in the run-up to Christmas. Slovenia's capital Ljubljana hosts a similar poster blitz this month.

20 November 2008 - Seminar "Sport and discrimination: Media perspective" (Strasbourg)
Lilian Thuram was the guest speaker at the Council of Europe’s sport seminar: “Sport and discrimination : the media perspective”. This event took place on 20 November 2008 in Strasbourg.
The seminar covered issues such as "How journalists can contribute to a fairer, more balanced coverage of the competition between nations which sports fixtures frequently involve?" and a lively debate between media professionals and NGOs provided a forum for sharing ideas on anti-discrimination initiatives.
