In October 2005,
21 young people from 19 European countries and their parents
gathered together at the Council of Europe invitation to discuss positive
parenting and approaches to a non-violent upbringing. Parents as well as
children were very interested in discussing these issues and willing to
share their own experiences and eager to look for solutions. There was
also an evident common interest among adults and children to communicate
and to understand each other. Both children and adults were very clear
about the negative consequences that arise when parents physically punish
their children and that the only way forward is to break the cycle of
violence and to promote a culture of mutual respect where both children
and adults respect each other.
The results of this event will be an input to the present work of the
Committee of Experts on Children and Families and will be presented to
the Lisbon Ministerial Conference. A regular consultation of children and
parents is under consideration.
